5 of the world’s best Oktoberfest events

Munich comes alive every autumn for one of the world’s most legendary folk festivals, Oktoberfest. However, while the whole affair remains quintessentially German in its choice of beverage, Oktoberfest is no longer confined to central Europe. So without further ado, don your dirndl, dust off your lederhosen and raise your glasses to five of the world’s greatest Oktoberfests. Prost!

1. Munich, Germany

Back to where it all began – some six million people flood Munich’s Theresienweise every year for the largest public fair in the world, cramming themselves into tents run by famous Bavarian breweries. This two-century old festival begins with the ceremonial tapping of a barrel and the magic words ‘O’zapft is!’ (‘it’s tapped!’)

2. Blumenau, Brazil

While Blumenau is marketed as the ‘the biggest German party in Brazil’, the festival is actually the largest Oktoberfest anywhere outside Munich. This lively event is packed full of raucous street bands, dancers and delicious fusion cuisine. Is there a better way to celebrate the region’s German ancestry? Not in our book.

3. Cincinnati, USA

Oktoberfest doesn’t get much kookier than in ‘Zinzinnati’, where revellers can watch events like the ‘Running of the Wieners’ (a dachshund race that aims to crown the ‘King of the Wiener Dogs’), the ‘World Brat Eating Contest’ and – our personal favourite – the ‘World’s Largest Chicken Dance’.

4. Okinawa, Japan

Japan’s pun-tastic Rocktoberfest is a German beer festival with a grungy twist. This three-day event is an adrenaline-fuelled whirlwind of guitar-shredding and beer guzzling in the midst of the Ryukyu Islands. Let it never be said that the world is boring…

5. Kitchener-Waterloo, Canada

The Canadians make a song and dance about their Oktoberfest, and why not? This event features a televised parade, a treasure hunt and a rather posh gala ball. We love every minute of it.
