9 things event organisers should know about social media in 2015

With a total of 1.65 billion active mobile social accounts globally and an estimated 2.13 billion social network users around the globe in 2016, you should probably consider treating your social networks with all your high and might! The social media landscape is forever vastly changing, but for now here are a few pointers to keep you on track for 2015:


1. Social media shopping is on the rise 

Earlier this year we saw the launch of the direct buy button on Facebook and only a mere few months ago Pinterest also added buyable pins. Not to mention twitter also launched its platform for real-time commerce. So expect e-commerce and social media to deepen as we get through the year, and don’t forget about using Facebook’s direct buy button on your event page.


2. Social media audio

A US study of digital consumption habits conveyed that the monthly audio podcast consumption grew from approximately 39 million monthly users in 2014 to approximately 46 million in 2015.

If you’ve got a podcast already, or are thinking of creating one after reading this, remember, podcasts give you the opportunity to entice people to follow you on social media, and have increasingly become social as landing pages now integrate social sharing buttons. This is a good way to promote your brand and the artists playing at your event.


3. Visual content is king

It’s no secret more social networks, like Facebook, have begun to enable their own video platforms, and more visual platforms like Pinterest and Instagram are becoming notoriously popular. There’s been a noticeable decline in YouTube usage, as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn show preferential treatment to video content hosted on their own platform.



4. Paid ads are inevitable

We’ve already started to see organic growth plummeting due to Facebook’s newsfeed algorithm, and word is that twitter hasn’t ruled out this approach either. Instagram is also working hard on its advertising platform, so if you want to get your messages notice then start coughing up the cash!


5. Brands become more human

Consumers continuously demand more personalised messages, and brands are realising that you can’t get away with a one-way conversation anymore (could you ever?).

6. Republish to grow reach

By 2020, the amount of information on the web is expected to increase by 600% (and some believe that number is low!). So, in order to get through that clutter of information in this day and age, you’re going to need to start reblushing the same update over and over again, as a few brands have already caught onto. So rather than focusing on several unique posts each day, try to reinforce a message so that you can focus on creating live interaction and conversations.



7. Everything’s a secret

Ever since Snowden leaked information about government surveillance we’ve been aroused by the topic of anonymity. As a result of that there’s also been a rise in apps to support this, such as Whisper and Secret. This means that now even those shy of voicing their opinions previously are happy to do it, so be on the look out for feedback and use it as an opportunity to build positive conversation.


8. Social network = wallet

PayPal is nothing new to the online payment world, but recently we’ve seen Apple Pay starting to push further and further. You can even use it on the London underground now. Facebook is also taking its next steps in this area. It already rolled out its autofill feature, allowing users who save their credit card details on the platform to check out with 450,000 e-commerce merchants. So, keep an eye out for the rise of social payment systems!


9. Smart devices get more social

We’re not just talking about smartphones and Apple watches, but things like fridges, and weighing scales. These devices have been programmed to send messages to the web and push notifications to social networks. Perhaps as these devices get smarter you’ll even see smart watches connecting to your Facebook event and alerting attendees of the next artists about to play.
